Door Handle Replacement

Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws for an attractive appearance. If your new handle doesn't have them already connected, you'll have to attach them separately.

Remove the handle that was previously used

The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home It's also an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock your door. But, over time your door handle can lose its grip, feel loose, or look old and worn. This is an indication that it's time for a replacement.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious problem as you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door which could put you and your family at risk.

The Strike Plate

You'll need to replace the latch plate after replacing the handle. It's the plate that is the one that holds the hole in which the latch for the door is inserted when the door closes. The package the new handles arrive in will include two options for latch plates - either a rectangular or circular (see the diagram above for the components of a door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate and make the handle more convenient.

The first step is to take off the screw that holds the latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. It might be beneficial to have a second person assist in this area if it is possible.

The latch plate should easily lift itself out of the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or doesn't move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate up.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the door jamb using the screws that were included with the new handles for internal bifold doors. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, shut and open the door to check whether it latches and closes correctly. If not you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or even forward or back until the door closes and latches correctly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, it may be necessary to expand the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too narrow, the wrong size latch, or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure as adjusting the strike plate, but with the use of a metal file instead an hammer and chisel.

Removing the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that is able to move in and out of the hole on the inside edge of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door closed. If your door wobbles when you close, a new latch may be all you need to fix the issue.

It's difficult to see the screws that attach the latch to the door, however there's usually a small hole on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and pry it off. After you've removed your trim plate, it will be simple to take off the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in the position.

If the latch is not easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place the item in the recessed latch slot and gently move it around until you feel the latch and handle start to split. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch is loose enough to let it out.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Make use of the new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.

Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the conservatory door handles's double glazed front door handles and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Check that the latch size of the new handle is in line with the measurement.

You'll need a new cylinder for your lock if replacing the handle and latch, or your old one is damaged. If you are not changing locks the new lock should fit into the recess you have already installed, and will work with your existing keys. Be sure to choose the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your handles.

Remove the cover plate

The first step in replacing an internal door handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which conceals the screws and mechanism inside. Use a flathead for removing the cover plate. It may have an opening on one side or be held by a pin.

Remove the screw holding the handle in the interior and place it aside when the cover plate is removed. You'll also need to remove the screws that are holding the latch and the plates inside and the latch plate, which can be done by loosening them using the help of a Philips screwdriver. Take the inner plates and latch from the door. Set them aside.

Not all doors have this gap. If yours does not have a handle, you'll need to drill a hole in the mila door handles to install the new handle. This is the same process for opening a locked door however, you'll need to be extra careful not to scratch the frame or door.

The installation of new door knob screws is necessary after the holes have been drilled. Make sure to buy the same size as the previous ones, to ensure that you do not end up with the handle that is too tight or too loose. Installing a new latch and strike rod is also necessary. They aren't included in all door handle sets.
