How to Replace an audi replacement key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor.
