How to Replace an audi smart key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi a4 key replacement since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine of the audi replacement car keys is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig, audi car key cover and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This part is common across the Audi Etron Key 80-100-200-RS2 range, Audi Key Replacement beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
