Buying a Pram Newborn

Prams and pushchairs are the multi-functional, flexible allies of parents and caregivers. They are the co-pilots of your child's new journey.

A pram newborn is designed for newborns and babies. It has an incredibly sturdy, deep carrycot that has soft and secure walls.

A pram will typically come with a bassinet. However, it can be transformed into a stroller seat once baby is ready.

Safety

The newborns of today are extremely fragile and need to be kept as secure as possible. A stroller or pram with safety features will keep your baby secure and comfortable while traveling. The essential requirements for any pram or stroller are to have a working brake, a five-point safety harness (2 shoulder straps, 2 waist straps, and a strap for the crotch) and the wrist tether strap that is for the person who is pushing the pram. Check that your chosen pram is up to the standards before you purchase.

Find a pram that allows your newborn to be seated in the suggested lie-flat position. This position supports the baby and prevents a potentially dangerous curve in the spine which can lead to spinal problems. It reduces the chance of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome) or asphyxiation by ensuring that the airways are open. Most prams that can be used from birth will have the seat unit, which will recline to a lay-flat pram mode for younger babies and then convert into a foldable pushchair seat unit for older children.

The suspension of a pram will determine how smoothly it is. A pram that has many suspensions is likely to be more costly but it may be worth it to purchase this feature if you intend to use your pram daily for a few years or more.

Always make sure to go through the instruction manual and check the warning labels for your pram or stroller. When not in use, you should place your stroller in a safe area away from any potential hazards like traffic, bicycles or other people. It is also important to remove any bags or other items from the handles, as they could cause your baby to become trapped or even suffocate.

Even if the baby is asleep, it's not recommended to leave a pram or stroller unattended. They can get wriggling and become stuck or the pram might slide away and the baby could be injured. Hanging bags, or other items from the handles isn't recommended as they can fall and strike your child in the head.

Comfort

Having the option of lie flat seating is a necessity for babies, as it promotes better back and lung development. A lot of prams come with cocoons or carrycots that creates a cozy nest-like atmosphere for your baby and can be easily detached from the frame. Some seats, such as the bucket-style seat on the egg2, can't be reclined completely flat, but offer the comfort of your child.

Some prams travel system also have an additional bassinet, infant inset or stroller seat so you can easily switch between sitting and sleeping modes based on your baby's requirements. This is often called a 'travel system' and is the first option you should test with your baby.

Look for a pram with two shoulder straps (ideally cushioned) and a sturdy five-point safety harness that fits your bub's body safely. Make sure there aren't any gaps, or loose places where fingers could get caught. Also, make sure that the buckles are simple for older children to operate. It's also worth considering whether you'd prefer a pram with a parent-facing feature or not. It's perfect for keeping an eye on your child and helping them feel reassured by the familiar sight of their parents.

Convenience

When buying a pram newborn it is important to consider your baby's needs for transport. Another feature to consider is the possibility of raising and lowering the infant's seat from a low to a high setting, which helps maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you.
